Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Published data in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these treatments should be informed of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Explaining the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the jabs is key to understanding the amplified rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce responsiveness to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

The NHS recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled a patient.

The struggle is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural support.
